The Edmonton Peace Pole Project
Peace Poles originated in Japan in 1955 and, in their most basic form, they are posts which bear the phrase "May Peace Prevail on Earth" or similar wishes for peace. They are now the most recognized symbol and monument to peace with over 200,000 peace poles displayed in almost every country on Earth.
Our Edmonton project is unique in that our peace poles reflect, through simple phrases and profound imagery, the hopes of young artists for a world at peace.
The Edmonton Peace Pole Project is a joint initiative of The Mahatma Gandhi Canadian Foundation for World Peace, Inner City Youth Development Association and the iHuman Youth Society. The young artists who have created these poles are served by these inner city agencies.
